University Campus

Located on the grounds of Federation University Australia Gippsland Campus, Kurnai College University Campus is for all Year 11 and Year 12 students. Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and Victorian Certificate of Education, Vocational Major & Victorian Pathways Certificate (VCE VM) programs are run here for about 300 students by staff who are highly experienced in their specialised teaching areas. In 2022, 15% of VCE Year 12 students sitting exams achieved an ATAR score of 90 or above, placing them in the 10% of VCE students in the state. 6.1% of VCE study scores were 40+, ranking Kurnai College 33rd of all government schools in Victoria. Over 16 VCE VM and VCE students also finished the year with apprenticeships or traineeships.

Kurnai College University Campus offers modern, well-resourced facilities for all students, regardless of their educational focus. Students studying Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Environmental Studies, and Health and Human Development have access to classrooms at Latrobe Leisure Centre in Churchill to support their learning. The learning spaces for subjects in Woodwork, Metalwork and Food are fully equipped and Art, Music and Theatre Studies share their facilities with Federation University Australia Gippsland Campus. Our students can also access other Federation University facilities such as the library and cafeteria. Science subjects like Chemistry, Physics and Biology have purpose-built rooms on campus.

The access our students have to such a wide range of facilities helps support the diverse subjects on offer, which is more than any other school in the Latrobe Valley. As a result, we have a very strong team of career advisors who work closely with students. From the time they select their first courses in Year 10, through the preparation of resumes and applications to university entry requirements, the career's team works closely with all students at the University Campus to ensure they leave Kurnai College with the best possible outcome.

Visitors always comment favorably on the atmosphere at the University Campus, which sits somewhere between a secondary school and a university. This is the atmosphere the school community was aiming for when the decision was made to build the senior campus of Kurnai College inside the grounds of the local university. If you would like to see the University Campus in operation, whether you are a parent of a student already enrolled at Kurnai or someone who is considering a shift to the University Campus, please call 5132 3800 to make an appointment. We will be happy to show you around and answer any questions you have.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)
SWPBS is a whole- school framework which provides schools with a systematic approach to promote both improved behaviour and school culture, while increasing academic performance. This is guided by a college matrix developed by staff and students. This matrix is visible in every classroom across the college and is used as the basis for rewarding students when they exhibit the expected behaviours.

The International Program at Kurnai College provides high quality education for international students. This is done in an environment designed specifically for senior students. Kurnai College’s senior campus is built within the grounds of Federation University’s Gippsland Campus; there are no distractions from junior students. Kurnai College students have access to university services such as the student union and cafeteria, the library and sporting facilities. Federation University students are also available to coach Kurnai College students free of charge.

If you are required to do a language program before beginning your Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) studies this can also be done at Kurnai College’s Language Centre. There is no need to start your studies at one school and then change school (and sometimes living arrangements) to finish your VCE. The Language Centre and its qualified staff ensure that new students get the appropriate grounding in English while meeting and working with the students who will be their classmates in the future. If necessary, further support in English is available for students after they have completed their language program.

At Kurnai College, we understand that while a high quality education is important when choosing a school, it is also important that you are in an environment where you feel safe and supported. The school is located in an area used to catering for international students. There are also College staff who speak Mandarin and Japanese. These staff assit with everyday needs, act as a link between the student and their teachers, and can speak directly to parents about progress. They also understand the cultural needs of international students and can help them make the shift from home to living and studying in Australia.

School Philosophy

Building a learning community that promotes respect and achievement

Kurnai College defines a Learning Community as a community where:

  • Learning is the focus and all members of the college community accept the responsibility for increasing their own learning and assist others to increase their learning

Kurnai College’s four pillars underpin all aspects of our work. They are:

  • Engagement
  • Excellence
  • Work Ethic
  • Relationships

Kurnai College supports and promote the principles and practices of Australian democracy. Kurnai College is committed to:

  • An elected government
  • The rule of law
  • Equal rights for all before the law
  • Freedom of religion
  • Freedom of speech and association
  • The values of openness and acceptance of differences and diversity
  • The safety of all children

The current Strategic Plan focuses on building teacher capacity through Professional Learning Teams, improved data literacy and Assessment for Learning practices. We are committed to creating positive learning environments through the Schoolwide Positive Behaviour Support Framework, incorporating a restorative approach that is informed by knowledge of generational poverty. The college values student, family and teacher voice.

Kurnai College has moved to a year level team approach to drive curriculum and pedagogical development. Peer coaching, instructional rounds and coaching are all strategies that inform this work. Kurnai College will also provide instructional leadership development opportunities for teaching staff over the period of the new plan.

Kurnai College has developed a strong ICT network and is building our E-learning capacity at every opportunity. Stage 2 of the Morwell campus redevelopment is underway and the College is utilising a Language and Culture centre at the Churchill Campus. This centre enhances the range and depth of LOTE delivery across the college, with an emphasis on Chinese to complement and build our existing international program and students' international perspective. Kurnai College takes pride in its inclusive learning environment and has done extra work to address the Marrung - Aboriginal Education Plan 2016-2026 and to build its intercultural understanding.
Kurnai College continues to explore creative pathways options for its students that capitalises on its partnerships with external providers, including Federation University. Consistently improving participation and retention rates, as well as VCE results, prove testimony to the growing profile Kurnai holds in the post compulsory landscape of Gippsland.

Kurnai College looks to the future with a sense of optimism and a positive frame of mind. With a stronger focus on our Kurnai identity and of belonging to one College, combined with an understanding of and commitment to our purpose, we move confidently forward striving to provide the best possible learning opportunities for all members of our Learning Community.

Kurnai College welcomes all students and we are particularly proud of our efforts to be a more inclusive Learning Community. The College has been recognised for its work in forging links with the Koorie community and continues to welcome students from all backgrounds, working with all to achieve success.

Enactment of the School Philosophy

The Kurnai College Strategic Plan will be the main focus when enacting the school philosophy. The main components include environmental context, student learning, student engagement and wellbeing and student pathways and transition. Our mission is divided into each of these categories and is carried out across all campuses.

The Kurnai College Vision sits at the centre of everything we do. Regular evaluation processes will be in place to measure performance in all areas of the school with respect to the implementation of the vision and values of the school.

The process at our school can be represented as the vision with values and beliefs at the centre. In an outer ring there is a set of principles. Beyond that is a set of practices. In all of our work we are governed by the question; "Is this work or process in line with the school vision, values and beliefs, and does it fall under a branch of the current Strategic Plan?" This question is a fundamental part of the practice of all leaders in the school.

College Principal Welcome

Thank you for your interest in our College.

Kurnai College is a multi-campus College in the Morwell-Churchill area of the Latrobe Valley, about 150 kilometres southeast of Melbourne. There are two Year 7 to 10 campuses; a campus in Morwell and a campus in Churchill. The senior campus caters for students in Years 11 and 12 and is located within the grounds of Federation University Australia.

Kurnai College is a Learning Community. We all commit to develop our own learning and we likewise commit to support the learning of others in our community.

Work Ethic, Engagement, Excellence and Relationships are the foundations of our Learning Community. These four simple values are the cornerstone of how we operate as an organisation. These pillars provide us with the drive to achieve our motto, Pathways to Success.

We have worked to create a Culture of Community within our College. We strive to be a part of our Latrobe Valley Community and we embrace the challenge of improving the learning of our students. We are implementing a College-wide Positive Behaviour Support system to provide a caring, proactive framework where we explicitly teach specific behaviours, focus on the good things students do and acknowledge them in a supportive environment. We embrace restorative practices as our preferred means of conflict resolution. We aim to provide a fair and supportive learning environment for all.

Through building our staff and students’ knowledge and skill at every opportunity, we build our community’s strength. We support learning through learning resources and technology. We know that students learn in different ways and at different paces; we aim to take this into account through Individual Learning Plans and a differentiated curriculum.

Our College has worked hard to welcome Koorie students into our community and to walk side by side with their families and elders to ensure an inclusive and culturally supportive learning environment for them.

We promote intercultural learning and global perspectives in our community. We have a sister school in China, Kou’an Middle School in Taizhou. We deliver language, culture classes and participate in global forums providing opportunities for our students and staff to learn about other cultures and global issues through student forums and international trips and exchanges.

If you are a student, a teacher, a parent or carer who:

  • is interested in learning
  • values relationships
  • believes in working hard
  • aims for excellence
  • and is prepared to have a go.

We are the school for you.

We look forward to supporting you on your child’s next step in their Learning Journey. If you have any additional enquires please contact our College.
