Transition Program

Moving from primary to secondary school is a big change. It can be exciting but can also be challenging or worrying for many students.

Kurnai College has a Transition Program that runs to support students who will be transitioning from grade 6 to year 7 to ensure that the move from primary to secondary school is as smooth as possible.

Activities and events are held throughout the students’ final year of primary school to support students and ensure that they feel confident when they commence at Kurnai College. A number of awareness days occur throughout the year for students from both the Churchill Campus and Morwell Campus feeder schools, with the state-wide orientation day in mid-December.

The state-wide Orientation Day occurs on Tuesday 12th of December.

Year 7

Year 7

Year 7 is committed to helping students transition from a primary to a secondary school setting, allowing them to actively engage in their own learning and begin their exciting journey into young adulthood.

The curriculum in Year 7 at Kurnai College is structured to begin developing the skills they need to transition into further pathways, with an underlining concept of having a Growth Mindset. The learning is designed to acknowledge student effort through Kurnai's four pillars (Work ethic, Engagement, Excellence and Relationships), providing regular acknowledgment for these learning behaviours in accordance with our Positive Behaviour Support Framework.

At Kurnai, we are focused on developing the reading skills of students through our Targeted Reading at Kurnai (TR@K) program, an intensive literacy intervention program for all students running four days a week. This program is developing the ability for students to access and engage in written texts which will provide opportunities in all learning areas of their education.

To aid in the transition to Kurnai College, students and families are provided multiple opportunities to develop positive learning relationships with teachers and the Year 7 coordination team. The Year 7 coordination team is structured with a Team Leader, responsible for the education of the whole student (curriculum and wellbeing), as well as a team of teachers who become deeply familiar with the needs of each student in and out of the classroom.

In Year 7, students are given multiple opportunities to showcase their extra-curricular skills by entering house competitions (swimming, athletics), leadership opportunities (Student Representative Council), music (group tuition in a variety of instruments including voice), and opportunities to represent the school in various sporting events.

Year 6 to Year 7 Transition Process

By developing and maintaining excellent relationships with our feeder primary schools, Kurnai College ensures the best transition process for each individual student. This includes receiving detailed reports and academic and wellbeing data to ensure we have the best understanding of every student. We then tailor programs that extend and support students to their full potential.

Our transition program includes:

  • Transition Day for all grade 5 and 6 students
  • School tours and open nights for parents and students
  • Peer Support Leaders involvement in the primary schools
  • Three days of orientation in Grade 6
  • Individual "Meetings for Success" to support students in the learning environment

5. Can my child catch a Kurnai school bus?

Students who reside further than 4.8 kms from their closest Kurnai College campus and are attending their closest school can access the school bus network.  Students who travel from neighboring towns would require financing their own travel by using local town network and by personal Myki cards.

School bus routes, to and from Kurnai, are updated yearly dependent on passenger numbers.

Paperwork will need to be completed before students access the school bus network.

Draft timetables for the 2021 school year will be handed out to Year 7 students on Orientation Week and visible on Compass in 2021.

7. What would my timetable look like?

You may be eligible for the State Government Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund of $225 per annum per student to partially offset this camp.  Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or temporary foster parents are eligible to apply. A Special Consideration category also exists.

16. Can my child have their mobile phone at school?

Recent state legislations do NOT allow students to have mobile phones on them during the school day.  Phones are discouraged to be brought to school, however, if they are with a student they should be kept in their locker turned off.  If they are found with a phone during school hours it will be confiscated and returned at the discretion of staff.

This initiative is a College-wide program and teachers at Morwell and Churchill campuses work together to develop curriculum suited to students wanting to advance in their learning. Years 7 & 8 - Sports & Activities

Years 7 & 8 - Sports & Activities

Our students in Years 7 and 8 are exposed to a variety of sports and activities over the course of the school year in practical classes including minor games, traditional sports and recreation activities.
Students in both levels participate in same gender swimming lessons provided by qualified AustSwim instructors at NO COST throughout Terms 3 & 4 to develop their confidence around water, as well as performing basic lifesaving rescues. This program is based on inclusiveness and access for all students, regardless of actual or perceived ability.

Our students also participate in Health classes, designed to promote physical activity and health across the lifespan, with study areas including but not limited to; Nutrition, Healthy Relationships, Sex Education and Puberty, Dimensions of Health, Human Anatomy, First Aid and Mental Health.

Interschool Sports
Kurnai College is affiliated with School Sports Victoria, Wellington Division.

Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports including; Soccer, AFL, Netball, Badminton, Volleyball, Cricket, Tennis, Athletics, Swimming, Cross country, Basketball, Hockey, Table Tennis and more!

These competitions help students to form greater respectful relationships with their peers, staff members and appreciate the abilities of students from across Gippsland and the state. It is a great opportunity to participate in sporting competitions within the school environment and take the successes back into the classroom, developing confidence, self-esteem and a sense of pride in individual and team achievements.

Each Kurnai College team that represents the school demonstrates success regardless of the score line at the end of the day. The students achieve this in the way that they conduct themselves both on and off the field, and the way they show appreciation for each other and the dedicated staff that volunteer their time and energy to make sporting events possible.

Recent on field success includes:

  • Senior Girls Soccer Team - Wellington & Gippsland Finalists (2022)
